WEST SURREY D.A. NEWS LETTER No.22
Our friend OLE SKEANE has written from Norway to say that the snows have now gone, and he and his son HAAKEN are now riding his handsome Mercian tandem again. There are no organised club runs as we know them, but they do have Audax type events which are run as a road race with medals for those finishing within specified times. Ole is looking forward to greeting Dave Bolingbroke when he visits NORWAY with his trike, and they set off on tour together.
The MIDSUMMER MADNESS SOCIAL was a great success. SEVENTY D.A. members and friends enjoyed the boat trip, meal, and getting together for a chat. It was a perfect summer's evening and the banks of the River Wey were alight with wild flowers shining in the sunshine. Thank you GILLIAN and BERYL, and all those who helped - particularly KATH, who gave up her boat trip to look after the bar!
Do you remember FOXEY HALLAM? JOHN WHATMORE met her at the MERIDEN SERVICE recently. She is riding with the Birmingham and Midland D.A. now. John says that her young son is now becoming a very tight fit in his basket seat on the back of Mum's bike.
John also met DAVID LOE, who is now riding with the group from BURTON-ON-TRENT.
The BENSTEAD CUP Competition events have been happening at a great pace lately. Recent results are:- SPEEDJUDGING - 1st Keith Parfitt (who's he?); 2nd R. Ryan; 3rd K. Williams. ROUGHSTUFF - 1st C. Seymour; 2nd K. Williams; 3rd R. Mantle. STONEHENGE 200km Reliability Ride - of 48 starters, 43 finished including 16 from the D.A. A very good event on a scenic route, most of which was on very quiet roads. The present position in the competition is:-
| 1st | (new man) K. Williams | 213 points | ||
| 2nd | (old man) H. Coleman | 180 " | ||
| 3rd | C. Seymour | 175 " | ||
| 4th | R. Mantle | 172 " | ||
| 5th | K. Parfitt | 140 " |
Whilst on the STONEHENGE ride a group of us arrived at a road junction
with a main road exactly as STUART JACKSON turned whilst taking part in
BORDER C.A. 100 MILE TIME TRIAL. We all shouted encouragement and
in spite of this Stuart came 4th, with our old friend from the CHARLOTTEVILLE
- ALUN MILLARD, 5th, and another great friend to the D.A. JOHN ESSEX winning
the handicap award.
| Ray Craig is organising a 400km AUDAX ride over 8/9th August.
It will include a most welcome hot meal at SALISBURY Y.H. You can
start at Salisbury if you want to be different.
STOP PRESS - BOB WATT completed the 600km WINDSOR-CHESTER-WINDSOR
Audax ride. Well done Bob, a credit to the INTERMEDIATE SECTION and
the D.A.!
Harold P.S. Thank you again
