Newsletter No. 4
Please note change of date The special tea celebrating the CTC's 100th Birthday will now be held on Sunday, 6 August. If you are coming on the General + Intermediate Sections' run preceding it, bring swimming gear.
Don Field We were sorry to learn of the death of our Vice-President, Don Field, on 1 June after a period of illness, at the age of 57. He was a CTC member and active in DA affairs for over forty years. For a long while he held the office of Woking Section secretary and treasurer, interrupted by a few years' war service in the Desert Air Force. In recent years his able chairing of DA Committee meetings was much appreciated by his colleagues. In his younger days he raced with the Charlotteville CC, of which he was president for some time, and he has served on many committees connected with the sport. He will be greatly missed by his many friends in the DA, who extend their deepest sympathy to his widow Beryl. A collection is being made in his memory: this has already paid for the DA's floral tribute at his funeral, and the surplus will be donated to Cancer Research. Contact Bill Inder if you wish to contribute to this worthy cause.
The Godalming Rally was an outstanding success and similar events are likely to take place in future. Harold Coleman wishes to thank all those DA members who assisted in running it, particularly Bill Inder and Chris Jeggo.
Reliability Rides A record number of 34 riders entered
this year's 50 in 3½ or 4, and enjoyed, incredibly, excellent weather
again. Later that day over 60 sat down to the DA's 50th Birthday
tea. Flowers on the tables, birthday cake and a glass of "Pomagne",
the presence of Les Warner and family, and the presentation of a gold badge
to Bill Inder in recognition of his 50 years service to the DA, all combined
to make the occasion a very special one indeed.
Congratulations are due to the ten regular
DA riders who entered and successfully completed the Stonehenge and back
reliability ride well inside the time allowed, and enjoyed a good day's
cycling into the bargain. The DA Committee has decided that this
ride may count towards the Benstead Cup: any two of the three reliability
rides this year may score up to 50 points. Don't forget the Centenary
"100" on 9 July. If you cannot make it that day, there may be a semi-formal
re-run later in the year if you wish to have a "100" time recorded on a
Centenary medal, but it will not count towards the Benstead Cup.
Engraving of medals, incidentally, is likely to cost 5p/letter + 20p.
