West Surrey DA in "The C.T.C. Gazette"

"The C.T.C. Gazette" was the magazine of the CTC from the nineteenth century to November 1963 (followed by "Cycletouring" from December 1963 onwards).  CTC activities in West Surrey started in 1921, as related in "Sixty Years On".  On this page are a few items selected from the 1920s at random (1921, 1922, 1928).  The 1930s are on a separate page.

(In 1922, West Surrey cyclists formed a Woking and Guildford Section of the Windsor, Eton and Slough Section of the Metropolitan D.A.  The Windsor, Eton and Slough Section itself had not been in existence for long:  -  CRJ)

January 1921, p. 11 - Doings of the District Associations

It is proposed to add yet another section to the Metropolitan D.A.  This, the eighth, is to be called the "Windsor, Slough and Eton" Section, and it will operate in the district indicated by the title.  Mr. M. A. Leaman, 4 Australia Road, Slough, has agreed to act as Hon. Runs Secretary, and all enquiries should be addressed to him, or to Mr. P. J. Randall, F.Z.S., St. Clair, Montem Lane, Slough, Councillor for Bucks, and organiser of the section.  There is undoubtedly scope for a large section in this interesting area, and the M.D.A. trust that Mr. Randall will receive enthusiastic support.

Members who desire to ride faster than 8 to 10 miles an hour are invited to ride with the newly formed section of Met. D.A. "Hard Riders."  All members of the Club may, of course, ride with the Hard Riders, but to become eligible for the Hard Riders' badge they must qualify by fulfilling a test of 100 miles in 8 hours (men), or 50 miles in four hours (women).

1922 Runs Lists

In June Gar Gribble became Hon. Asst. Secretary.  Runs started at Woking Council Offices at 9.30 from June to September, and then from October at Victoria Arch at 9.30.  For about half of these months that was all the information that was published in the "Gazette", while in the other months weekly runs were advertised, a typical example following. - CRJ

CYCLISTS' CHURCH PARADE

On Sunday, April 29th, an inter-D.A. church parade was held at New Alresford, Hants.  About 120 cyclists attended from the Portsmouth, Reading, South Bucks, West Surrey and Wessex D.A.s and the Portsmouth North End C.C.  The service was conducted by the Rev. A. J. Robertson, and the proceeds of the collection were devoted to the Church of England Waifs and Strays society.  After the service 60 of the cyclists sat down to tea at the old-world coaching inn, " The Horse and Groom," at New Alresford, whilst the rest of the party went their several ways to take refreshment nearer home.
