At present the main content of the archives section is material originally intended to be of interest to the general member.  There are selected articles from the DA magazine, "The West Surrey Cyclist", and all the DA Newsletters that preceded it.  From its earliest days the DA has submitted reports on its activities to local newspapers and the CTC's own magazine ("The C.T.C. Gazette" and its successors).  A few of the latter are included here, but the DA archives (the paper ones) also include several scrapbooks of press cuttings.

Runs Lists are of interest because they are a normally complete list of the DA's activities, including social events, and show where and how far we used to ride.

Annual Reports were never written to entertain, but they were intended to provide a comprehensive account of the DA's activities in just a couple of pages, so some of these may be added to the website at a later date.  (Some Annual Reports were reproduced in the magazine.)  The Annual Accounts are generally not that interesting - the DA has never gone bankrupt nor made a fortune!  They, together with the DA's Minute Books (minutes of Annual General Meetings and committee meetings) are probably best left as source material for serious historians.  (Once again, some AGM minutes were reproduced in the magazine.)

Finally, the DA has photograph albums.  A selection of historic photographs will be added in due course.

Runs Lists

Sept-Oct 1974  - over 30 years ago - long before PCs and word processors.  This Runs List has been re-typed exactly as it was originally, including spacing, punctuation and errors.  The only difference in appearance between the web-page you see and the original paper copy is the extra white space above and below the horizontal rulings, which were drawn with ruler and pen between the lines in the original.  If the vertical alignment wasn't quite right, the typist wasn't going to type the whole page again.  It was not so easy to read as our modern productions, which benefit greatly from the control over presentation permitted by modern technology.

My first attempt at this Runs List used an HTML* table and other standard HTML features, but I thought that some of the flavour of the original had been lost, although it is easier to extract the information.  What do you think?

Newsletters

The newsletter was started in 1978.  At that time the Runs List was issued every two months, and was printed on one side of a foolscap sheet of paper.  The blank reverse was crying out to be used to improve communications within the D.A.

Editors:
Chris Jeggo January 1978 (Issue 1) - April 1979 (Issue 8)
Harold Coleman May 1979 (Issue 9) - December 1983 (Issue 36)
Robert Shiels January 1984 (Issue 37) - December 1984 (Issue 42)
January 1985 - December 1985 (these were not numbered)

The Newsletter became redundant when Robert Shiels started the magazine, "The West Surrey Cyclist", in 1985.

Magazines

Summer-Autumn 1985 - the first issue, over 20 years ago - the text has been re-typed exactly as it was originally.  (Or do you prefer the HTML version?)

The original design of front cover, featuring a drawing of a Surrey scene by Chris Juden, was used up to March 2000.

When I started scanning magazines and converting them to web pages I supplied sets of four magazines to various people in W Surrey DA with a 'score sheet' for them to indicate which items they thought should be included and which excluded.  I was surprised at how much some of their scores differed from my own.  If in doubt, I have opted for inclusion.  So if anyone, a reviewer or I, thought an article should go in, it did.  This has resulted in a wide range of quality.  The main types of exclusion are advertisements, runs lists (covered elsewhere) and items that are not particularly relevant to West Surrey DA.

In general I have not corrected errors.  I regard these pages as archives, and their production as a task of transcription rather than editing.  I have corrected obvious typographical errors in articles which are generally error-free.  Other articles are so full of spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors that to correct them would be an excessive alteration of an archive, as well as being too time-consuming.  So you will have to put up with "all these roughnesses, pimples and warts".  They are, like the vibration of certain types of motorcycle, 'character'.
