West Surrey DA, CTC - All-day Intermediate Rides - 2006-7 - Log - mainly route details

. 2005-6 . 2007-8 . back to main page .

There are references below to Charles Harper.  West Surrey DA library contains a book, now lacking its cover:  "Motor Runs Round London" -- A series of half-day, day and week-end trips. -- Selected, described & illustrated by Charles G Harper -- "Volume II.  South of the Thames".  An internet search discovered that "Volume I.  North of the Thames" was published in 1921, so my guess is that Vol. II was published a year or so later (CGH was a prolific writer and journalist).  (According to http://www.antiqbook.nl/boox/bkb/13009.shtml, pub. ca 1920.)  In other words, the DA purchased this useful guide book to inform its earliest rides.

1 Oct 06 2nd day of Peak District Weekend.  Left Bakewell via Monsal Trail (disused railway).  Sign at Great Longstone Station said end of route for cyclists, but 1:25000 map showed cycle route continuing all the way to the tunnel entrance, where the second transverse footpath crossed the line.  Quality of trackbed deteriorated where first footpath crossed, and sign said closed tunnel ahead.  Route actually blocked by locked gate across overbridge aperture some 200m short of the tunnel entrance, in cutting, so could not reach second footpath.  Retraced to first footpath, decided not to use it, so retraced to Great Longstone Station, whence by road to Monsal Head.  Then via Upperdale to Cressbrook, Litton (C in the old forge, now Post Office, general store and café), Tideswell (visited the parish church, 'The Cathedral of the Peak'), Little Hucklow, Castleton road, then at bottom of steep hill took acute right turn into lane past cement works to Hope (L in Woodbine Café).  Main road to Castleton;  walked a short distance up Cave Dale.  Cycled up the Winnats Pass (1km of 20%).  Rode down the old main road to just past the Blue John Mine entrance, to look at how the 'Shivering Mountain', Mam Tor, had destroyed the next section of road by landslip.  Retraced to junction and took the Chapel-en-le-Frith road for a short distance, before turning right to climb over the W shoulder of Mam Tor and then descend into Edale.  From the top saw large black cloud approaching from the SW.  Whizzed down Edale and made it back to the Woodbine Café with only light rain.  Ordered teas, treacle tart, Yorkshire curd cake, etc.  Before it arrived the cloudburst started!  Left after second cloudburst, and a few miles later, just after Bradwell, took waterproofs off for the climb up the B road.  Thence via Wardlow back to Monsal Head, continuing the long freewheel straight through to Ashford, then a mile or so of A6 back to Bakewell.  With Anne & Derek T and Dave W.  43 miles.
8 Oct 06 Dep. WPO with Barbara C, David & Libby J and visitors Catherine (S. African) and Daniel (German).  Hook Heath, footpath to Mayford Village Hall on Saunders Lane, Smarts Heath, past the 'Jolly Farmer', Jacob's Well, Salt Box Road, Cumberland Avenue, Keens Lane, footpath and back roads to cross Aldershot Road into Park Barn Estate, past the hospital to the Cathedral roundabout, Onslow Village, coming out at top of Farnham Road, Compton (C @ Watts Gallery).  Barbara, David & Libby visited the gallery and chapel, while Catherine, Daniel and I retraced to Farnham Road, descended it to Guildford centre, thence to the Spectrum leisure centre to spend too much at the one-day cycle sale.  They returned to Woking while I had lunch, then cycled to Merrow, Newlands Corner, Shere, Little London (pint at 'William IV'), Farley Heath, Stroud Common, Run Common, Downs Link all the way to Peasmarsh Junction via the new bridge over the Wey, footpath beside railway to Broadford, Artington, Guildford, Jacob's Well, Smarts Heath, Saunders Lane, Hook Heath, home.  41 miles (N.B.  CRJ miles - home to home - throughout this file).
