Peak District Weekend. This year
Hartington (1),
(2)
was our base. On Saturday we cycled through Earl Sterndale to Brierlow Bar, partly on National Cycle Network Route 68. At this point we found the A515 closed and all the traffic diverted on to the minor road that carries NCN68, so we took the main road, and found that we could get past the railway bridge strengthening works and enjoy a quiet ride into the centre of Buxton (1),
(2),
where we admired the crescent, tasted the spa water and had coffee. Leaving via NCN68, we turned left at the top of Long Hill in order to descend Bunsall Incline, now a road but formerly part of the original Cromford and High Peak railway, into the
Goyt Valley (1),
(2). Admiring this beauty spot as we rode up, we reached the Cat and Fiddle for lunch, now the second highest pub in England but the highest when it was built. Crossing Axe Edge Moor we could make out the Shropshire hills far to the south-west, and some of the Welsh mountains. Diverting briefly to England's highest village, Flash, we headed south along Morridge with views down into the heads of the Dove and Manifold valleys to our left, across Cheshire and beyond on our right, and of the Staffordshire gritstone crags of
The Roaches, Hen Cloud and Ramshaw Rocks ahead. Three miles downhill (much at 30mph) took us to Warslow and then Ecton in the
Manifold Valley. We rode down the
Manifold Trail through Swainsley Tunnel to Wettonmill for tea, then back up the disused railway to its former terminus at Hulme End in order to regain Hartington.
On Sunday we followed the Tissington Trail (1), (2) to coffee at Tissington (1), (2). Lunch was at the Miners Arms at Brassington(1), (2), whence we climbed the hill to Middleton Top (1), (2). The level and scenic High Peak Trail (1), (2) took us to Parsley Hay for a cuppa, whence the Tissington Trail returned us to Hartington Station. Good food and drink was obtained, as on Saturday, at the Devonshire Arms. After a short ride on Monday morning, up the Dove valley, through Longnor and down the Manifold valley, lunch at Beresford Tea Rooms (CTC recommended) preceded the drive home. |

Welsh Festival of Cycling -- Llandovery. The 'summer' weather let up - we didn't need to wear cycling waterproofs! And the scenery of the Tywi, Cothi and Usk Valleys and Black Mountain was superb. The Saturday evening film 'Bicycle Thieves' ('Ladri di Biciclette', 1948, with subtitles) was excellent, as was Dave Hill's Sunday evening slide show of his Himalayan cycling expedition.

Dieppe Raid: Two of us went for a long weekend, two for a long half-week and two for a whole week. The "Tour des Trois Vallées" on Sunday the 10th was well organised by the Club des Cyclotouristes Dieppois, with scenic, well marked routes and a pleasant lunch stop. The next day four of us headed south through the lanes to an excellent chambres d'hôtes at Eslettes, north-west of Rouen. It was Alan's and Richard's fourth stay there. We enjoyed a warm welcome, comfortable quarters and Jean-Claude's fine dinners, washed down with Normandy cider and wine. Several days of pleasant cycling on very quiet roads and interesting sight-seeing completed this year's French foray.

| 29 April | Guildford Station 186/992496 | 0900 | CTC AGM Ride -- Scenic Surrey. Our visitors were fascinated by the Watts chapel at Compton and appreciated the views from the Hog's Back, the picturesque villages of Puttenham, Seale and Shackleford, the medieval bridges over the Wey at Tilford, Frensham Great Pond, and the leafy lanes connecting all these. Excellent weather again too! | ||
| 22 April | Pyrford Common
or Godalming |
0800 -
0900 |
DA event -- 50 mile reliability ride. An ever-popular ride. The sun shone and the birds sang; there were primroses at the roadside, bluebells in the woods, blossom everywhere and good food, beer and welcome at the King's Head, Holmbury St Mary. Around 50 people enjoyed a perfect spring day out on their bikes.
| 15 April | Frimley Green | 0900 | Next Door the George, Odiham. Sat outside in the sunshine. | Royal Oak, Lasham 186/676426. Sat outside in the garden -- in the shade! | Used the Basingstoke Canal towpath to pass through Fleet, as a link in a traffic-free route from Winchfield to Odiham, and to visit the ruins of Odiham Castle. |
| 8 April
Easter |
Normandy Crossroads | 0900 | Caffè Nero, Godalming | Barley Mow, Tilford | Impromptu ride to do some research for the AGM ride on 29 April, look at some medieval bridges over the River Wey etc. |
| 1 April | Chobham | 0900 | Birds Hill Golf Course, Hawthorn Hill (a bit smoky, roll on July 1st!) | Anchor Inn, Henley-on-Thames; friendly, relaxed, Brakspears | Why are there so few cafés this side of Henley? We were gasping by the time we got back to Hamiltons, Sunningdale. |
| Sat 24 Mar | Medstead Village Hall | 1000 | Phil Hampton Memorial Ride -- North Hampshire DA | 30 or 50 scenic miles. A dry day, but with a cold, strong breeze against us during the return leg. | |
| 18 March | Ash Station | 0915 | Frensham Garden Centre | The Queens, Selborne 186/742336. Friendly as ever. Good sandwiches and beer. | Today we had what my Dad used to call a 'lazy' wind. It can't be bothered to go round you -- it just goes straight through! |
| 11 March | Normandy Crossroads | 0915 | Secretts Garden Centre, Milford | Half Moon, Northchapel 186/951294 | A perfect spring day! We sat outside in the sun at coffee, lunch, and tea at Hector's at Farncombe Boat House. |

| 18 Feb | Chobham | 0930 | L'Aroma at Wyevale Garden Centre, A30, Windlesham, instead of Hawthorn Hill | Henley-on-Thames not reached. | Morning only ride because of my 'tennis elbow'. |
| 11 Feb | Mytchett Crossroads | 0930 | Odiham not reached. | Lasham not reached. | Short morning ride because of my 'tennis elbow', which has nothing to do with tennis. |
| 4 February | Pyrford Common | 0930 | Café Rouge, Dorking | Six Bells, Newdigate (Rusper could not be reached, mainly because of time lost on an icy stretch of road where another cycling group had suffered an accident.) Thanks to Alan Holbrook for leading this ride at short notice because of my 'tennis elbow'. | |
| 28 January | Woking | 0915 | Lucky Duck, Shere | Mucky Duck, Tisman's Common | Ducky ride! |
| 21 January | Chobham | 0930 | Wren Chocolate Theatre Café, Thames St, Windsor | Jolly Woodman, Littleworth Common 175/935865. Good but slightly pricey. | Gloriously sunny and clear, but cool. On the edge of Burnham Beeches we had to negotiate a couple of trees blown down during Thursday's storm. A lot of water about, too. |
| 14 January | Took the 0828 train from Woking to Micheldever to explore some quiet lanes out west. Over the downs to Whitchurch and St. Mary Bourne (interesting church) then up the lovely Bourne Valley. Magnificent views from The Ridgeway between Walbury Hill (297m) and Combe Gibbet. Elevenses at the CTC-recommended Tutti Pole Café in Hungerford. Lanes beside the Kennet & Avon Canal took us to Great Bedwyn with its unusual stonemasonry display and museum. The Swan at Wilton provided good beer and a good, light lunch. There were extensive views from Chute Causeway, an old Roman road, then, south of Andover, beautiful black and white, thatched cottages in Upper Clatford and Wherwell. As the sun set we regained Micheldever for our train home. | ||||
