10 Dec Frimley Green 0930 Next Door the George, Odiham The Cedars, Binsted 186/773411 -- the usual warm welcome -- good food and beer and a blazing fire. Frosty but sunny start.  At Dogmersfield, the modern name for the hamlet called Pilcot in Charles G. Harper's book 'Motor Runs Round London. Vol. 2 South of the Thames' (probably early 1920s), we found Pilcot Mill, the subject of one of his excellent drawings. The main building still stands, but other parts have been reduced to their foundations.  The afternoon was damp and grey but we managed to reach home before the serious rain started, at dusk.

Bakewell, Peak District.  Four of us enjoyed two good, scenic rides.  On Saturday we visited the stone circle at Arbor Low, then followed the Tissington Trail (disused railway, carrying mainly cycle traffic this day) from Parsley Hay to Tissington for lunch.  There are plenty of good views from the embankments and 'corniche' sections of this old line.  In the afternoon we visited Dovedale stepping stones(1), (2) and Ilam, returning via the entire length of the Manifold Trail (1), (2) (another disused railway) from Waterhouses via Wetton Mill (café) to Hulme End, through Hartington and over Long Rake.  Sunday's route started along the Monsal Trail (yet another disused railway -- in the Peak District you have to make the most of the level bits!), then used minor roads via Great Longstone, Monsal Head and Cressbrook to Tideswell, with its parish church, 'The Cathedral of the Peak'.  Descending off the limestone plateau to the Hope valley we had a superb view of Mam Tor and the ridge running eastwards from it to Lose Hill, with loftier Kinder Scout beyond.  We had lunch in Hope at the Woodbine Café, well known to cyclists, and then rode into Castleton, where we walked a short distance up Cave Dale in warm sunshine.  Next came the Winnats Pass, serious stuff, 1km of 20%. Then a short descent, down what used to be the A625 to where it now ends just outside the entrance to the Blue John Mine, allowed us to view the effects of the landslip that closed the road.  A climb by road to Mam Nick, on the shoulder of Mam Tor, revealed a large, black cloud heading our way from the south-west. Only light rain assailed us as we scuttled, wind assisted, down Edale, alongside the Manchester to Sheffield railway, but soon after we regained the Woodbine Café the heavens opened.  The main road outside was awash, seething.  We fortified ourselves with treacle tart, Yorkshire curd cake and pots of tea.  After the second downpour we ventured forth, and were able to take off our waterproofs at Bradwell, before the serious climbing back on to the plateau commenced.  The climb through Wardlow and beyond took us to a summit whence it was eye-watering freewheeling for the entire three miles through Monsal Head to Ashford-in-the-Water, whence a mile and a bit of A6 beside the River Wye returned us to Bakewell. The two days' tally:  90-ish top-quality touring miles.
24 Sep Fourteen had fun taking part in the DA's Tricyclathon - 3 light-hearted competitions, pace-judging, a short hill-climb, and freewheeling - on a beautiful, sunny morning, the overnight heavy rain having cleared leaving the countryside sparkling.  Others turned up to watch, provide encouragement, or simply to chat while they enjoyed their elevenses at Manor Farm Craft Centre, Seale.

Welsh Festival of Cycling, Llandovery - the weather turned out to be drier than in Surrey, and the rides were scenic.  A good get-together.
2½ miles east of Llandovery we came across a stone monument beside the A40.  The first part of the inscription reads:
"This pillar is called Mail Coach Pillar and erected as a caution to mail coach drivers to keep from intoxication and in memory of the Gloucester & Carmarthen mail coach - which was driven by Edward Jenkins on the 19 day of December in the year 1835, who was intoxicated at the time & drove the mail on the wrong side of the road and going at a full speed or gallop met a cart & permitted the leader to turn short round to the right hand & went down over the precipice 121 feet where at the bottom near the river it came against an ash tree when the coach was dashed into several pieces"
