Introduction

This group of CTC West Surrey (CTCWS) aims to cater for those who find the Sunday Wayfarers group too slow and the Sunday Riders or Sunday Morning-only Intermediates too fast.  The average riding speed for a day's ride usually falls between 11 and 13 mph.  We go at the pace of the slowest, no-one gets left behind, we start together and we finish together.  The day's distance is usually between 50 and 60 miles, less in winter when we start later and aim to be home before sunset.  We stop for mid-morning coffee and lunch, which is usually at a pub, and sometimes for a mid-afternoon cup of tea.  Sometimes we stop to look at places of interest.

While every effort is made to keep to the itinerary published on the Rides List, i.e. start point, coffee place and lunch place, within that framework the plan can be varied "on the fly" to take into account the weather, participants' wishes and dealing with problems such as punctures.  The aim is to enjoy exploring the countryside using the quieter roads.  Occasionally short stretches of main road or easy off-road tracks are used where lane routes would be too circuitous.

We are fortunate in having a good variety of landscapes in which to cycle in Surrey and neighbouring counties.  Nevertheless, it is good to get further afield, and you will find a few car-assisted rides and the occasional weekend tour listed below.

To cater for our scattered membership, and for variety, rides start at various different places around our area.  There is a list of start points below.  It is possible to park a car at or near most of them.

CTC West Surrey organises a number of cycling events on Sundays throughout the main season.  These enjoyable events are recommended, and this group organises no rides on these dates.

At the moment there is not a ride every Sunday.  Apart from avoiding clashes with CTCWS events, this is because I am leading nearly every ride at present, and I need to keep a few Sundays free for family commitments and other activities.  More rides can be put on the programme if people volunteer to lead them.  Please volunteer!  On some 'blank' Sundays it turns out that I am free after all, in which case I usually go for a bike ride, sometimes with or meeting another CTCWS group.  So if you fancy a ride on such days, phone or email me.  If something can be arranged, details can be added to this web page at short notice, and I can notify those of you who have given me your email addresses.

(The Cyclists' Touring Club now calls itself simply CTC because it is not just about touring.  It also calls itself 'the Cyclists' Association' because it caters for all forms of cycling except racing, including utility cycling and most forms of leisure riding, and it acts to protect the interests of all cyclists.  Also, the 'D.A.' in the logo in the top right-hand corner of this web page means 'District Association', the former name for a CTC local group.)
