On Friday 22 June Woking Jazz Circle launched "NEW GUMBO"!
Well known local reed player, Mike Atterbury, recently retired after 18 years with the Denise Lawrence Band, was suffering withdrawal symptoms so the suggestion from old friend, trumpeter Tony Ashwell, that they should try to put together something a little different, was accepted with enthusiasm. A four piece band playing swinging jazz, tunes old and new and, above all, having fun together before their lips went forever was the objective. Malc Saunders was brought out of retirement to fill the bass slot and another old friend, the excellent Brent Baird, signed up to play guitar and banjo. Rehearsals have gone well and the enigmatically named "New Gumbo" are ready to meet the public, hopefully in large numbers!
