The society was founded in 1923 as Woking Music Club by Mrs Margaret Walker, a prominent local figure on the music scene. It is now (under a new name) in its
86th season.
Famous performers of the past include Dame Myra Hess, Kathleen Ferrier, Artur Rubinstein, Gerald Moore, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Dame Janet Baker, the Amadeus String Quartet and Julian Bream. Two years ago, Elizabeth Watts, a winner of the Lieder section of the Cardiff Singer of the World, delighted us with her voice. More recently, some members attended the Wigmore Hall début of the talented pianist who opens this season, Irina Lankova, and who received rapturous applause for her magical performance.
A committee of dedicated local people run the Society with care and enthusiasm; new members are very welcome (see the extra discount that membership brings) and the concerts are open to the public. The concerts take place in a pleasant venue, the Kemp Room of the H. G. Wells Centre, situated near a good car park, and only 5 minutes' walk from Woking Station. Do come and give us a try - contact a member of the committee for further details. Please also support the advertisers in our brochure, some of whom provide extra discounts. To apply to join the society please fill in an application form.
