Bedfordshire and Luton Archives and Records Service (BLARS) were asked (Dec 2003) to provide photocopies of six Jago baptisms in East Hyde over the period 1862-6 listed in the International Genealogical Index (IGI) published by the LDS Church.  They replied that the original registers were still at the church, and that two entries are virtually illegible in their microfiche copies, while the rest are of poor quality.

David wrote that the church was demolished in the 1920's, the churchyard is now (August 2002) totally overgrown and more like a wood. Most of the gravestones are leaning up against a wall, but he couldn't find the headstone. He did find the footstone still in situ.

The register is mainly in Latin.  It contains some items of general interest in addition to the official lists.  The Latin I studied at school was classical, and I have to admit that that was a long time ago, so I don't regard myself as a competent translator.  However, some of the following pieces gave me difficulties which might be explained by the vicar(s) responsible having used Latin which was not strictly classical or not strictly correct.  Perhaps some real Latin scholar reading this can help me out.

1702. "Hoc anno multi febri periêre malignâ."  Roughly:  "This year -- many -- of fever (or fevers?) -- perish -- evil."  [There were no circumflex accents in the Latin I learnt.]
1715. "Hoc anno in mense Martio [i.e., 1716 new style] ignea Meteoria visa mirabilia in Aore apparebant."  This year in the month of March burning meteors, wonderful sights, appeared in ??.  [I cannot find Aor... in any Latin dictionary in my local library.  Possibly "in Aurae" (in the air) or "in Aurorae" (in the east).]
"Vigesimo secundo die Aprilis fuit totalis Eclipsis Solis, & multa Stella conspiciebantur."  "On the 22nd day of April there was a total eclipse of the sun, and many stars were perceived."
