Date of census:  2nd April 1871

In the 1871 census, a schedule was delivered to every household before the night of the census, completed by the householder, and collected by the enumerator after the night of the census.  The enumerator then copied the details from the individual schedules into his Enumeration Book.

Extract from General Instruction to the Enumerator:
NAMES - Write the First Christian Name in full;  initial, or first letters of the other Christian names of a person who has more than one, may be inserted.

Abbreviations:  SN - Schedule number;  Cond - Condition as to marriage;  Age - Age last birthday;  do - ditto;  Mar - married;  Unm - unmarried;  W - widow.

Description of Enumeration District:

That Part of the Parish of Sheriffhales which lies in the County of Salop.  This part of the Parish contains much land which is planted with timber, and which will perhaps account for the comparitive fewness of its inhabitants.
Note.  It is a very scattered district, one or two houses standing here and there, in all parts of it.  It extends about 4 and a half miles from North to South and 2 and a half from East to West.  Consequently - much ground has to be traversed in order to visit every house in the district.
Salop begins here and continues to end of Sub District.  (Sheriffhales has two other districts, both in Staffordshire.)
