Date of Census: 6th June 1841

For the 1841 census, the enumerator visited every house in his enumeration district, completing his Enumeration Schedule as he went. (In subsequent censuses, a schedule was delivered to every household before the night of the census, completed by the householder, and collected by the enumerator after the night of the census.)

Extracts from General Instruction to the Enumerator:
Names - Where there are more christian names than one, write down only the first.
Age - Write the age of every person under 15 years of age as it is stated to you. For persons aged 15 years and upwards, write the lowest of the term of 5 years within which the age is. Thus - for Persons aged 15 years and under 20 write 15. ... and so on up to the greatest ages. (Comment: not all enumerators followed this instruction; some appeared to follow it for some but not all entries.)
