In August, Greg Walasek ended his season prematurely when he broke a hip in a track spill at Poole. The promoters decided on a Pole clearout as neither Chrzanowski or to a lesser extent Staszewski had managed any sort of consistency. A gamble on their replacements; Lars Gunnestad needs no introduction, as direct replacement for Walasek; Henrik Gustafsson, on a woefully low average after a disasterous helf-season with Belle Vue last year; Andre Compton, the number one at Premier League Newcastle. e
After a bright start by Gunnestad and Gustafsson, both faded and Gustafsson ended up injured. Compton, despite his efforts found life in the Elite League tough but showed some signs that he could be worth a recall.
Pirates ended on a high, winning the Craven Shield for the second successive year.
