La Haine
La Haine is packed with sharp street
humour, intense action and brutally brilliant camera work.
Police viciously beat a 16-year-old housing estate kid they are
questioning, leaving him almost dead. Responding to violence, teenagers
from the estate turn their home into a 24 hour war zone. Among the
people blinded by hate are Said, Vinz and Hubert, youths who survive on
petty crime and dealing dope. In the intensely volatile environment, the
teenagers find a chrome-plated Smith & Wesson 44 that a plain-clothes
cop has lost. If killing a cop with his own gun doesn't express their
rage then what will?
The French cabinet commissioned a special screening of this tragic story
on its release, to see the problems of the angry French underclass on
the streets of Paris.
"A brutally brilliant masterpiece of 90s cinema" - NME

Last Orders
Fred Schepisi's adaptation of
Graham Swift's prize-winning novel is a quietly graceful portrait of
four working-class British, bound by years of friendship, that unites
some of Britain's finest actors in a powerful and deeply moving ensemble
production.
Michael Caine stars as Jack Dodd, the charismatic leader of the group,
whose death and last wishes sends his friends on a nostalgic journey
from London to Margate to scatter Jack's ashes in the sea. After forty
years of warming the seats at their favorite pub, longtime friends and
WWII veterans Ray (Bob Hoskins), Lenny (David Hemmings), and Vic (Tom
Courtenay) are forced to face the loss of one of their own as they make
the "epic" journey accompanied by Jack's flashy, prodigal son Vince (Ray
Winstone). As the four men make their way to Margate, going from pub to
pub, they reflect on a lifetime of memories of Jack, which are recreated
in a series of multi-layered flashbacks that explore the delicate
interweaving of their friendships; full of secrets, resentments, and
deeply rooted loyalty. |

Legally Blonde
Reese Witherspoon gives a glittering performance as Elle
Woods, the natural blonde sorority queen who enrolls at Harvard Law
School. Expecting her boyfriend Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis) to
propose, Elle is mortified when instead he says he needs somebody
serious as his wife. When Elle discovers Warner's brother is engaged to
a law student, she discovers enrolling at Harvard might be the way to
prove she is serious. She studies for the LSATs, submits a video essay -
in which she appears in a sequined bikini - and, miraculously, is
accepted. At first, Elle is rebuked by Professor Stromwell (Holland
Taylor) and is the target of snide comments from other students. But,
gradually, it becomes clear that Elle is no fish out of water; she is
smarter, more driven, and more likely to survive in the rarefied Harvard
atmosphere than anyone else.
Witherspoon gets fine support from Selma Blair as Warner's new fiancee,
Jennifer Coolidge as a beautician, Victor Garber as an unscrupulous
professor, Ali Larter as a client from Elle's sorority, and Luke Wilson
as a lawyer fascinated by Elle's unconventional approach.

Liberty Heights
From the Academy Award winning director
of Rain Man, Barry Levinson, comes a warmly funny, semi-autobiographical
tale of a pivotal time in American social history. The year is 1954; a
season of dramatic social upheaval and excitement is explored through
the eyes of a Jewish family living in Baltimore.
The two sons, Van and Ben, discover the opposite sex: one becoming
infatuated with a local, non-Jewish rich girl, the other befriending his
school's first black student. In the meantime their father, a
strip-club-owner, becomes increasingly involved in a money racket and is
soon out of his depth.
A beautiful story of friendship and romance, set against a vivid
background of racism, Cadillacs, rock'n'roll and religion. The times are
indeed changing and it seems life will never be the same.
