Eric Ratcliffe's History
This is the first cyclostyled issue, Ore No.1, produced in
1954 from wax stencils cut by an old Imperial typewriter,
through which printer's red ink oozed on to quarto-size
green tinted paper. This was in 1954. Contributors rallied
to the masthead including Eric Nixon, Bill Turner and his
wife Anne, John Smith and Frederick Grubb. The editorial
betrayed its nationalism and love of antiquity. The Celts and
Romans had not yet made a debut. The price was
Ninepence in "old money" (between 3p and 4p to-day).
Five years later, this was No.10, incorporating the
"radiant head" - indicative of human spirituality, which
was used for many more issues. It was a photo of a
carved head from Bali in my possession. Inflation had
caused the price to rise to one shilling (5p to-day).
Some contributors - Geoffrey Holloway, R.L.Cook, Mabel
Ferrett, J.Phoenice (Mrs Fox-Hutchinson -Northumbrian
who adored Pekingese dogs and wrote them into her
poetry), Leonard Kendall, Brian Pearce. And a valued
article from Derek Stanford.
A LOW POINT
After No.10, domestic trouble which included the
sad reduction
of all Ore material, correspondence files and
subscriber list to cinders and relocation of the
editor, circumstances allowed rebirth of Ore as
the folded sheet No.11. It was then 1967.
