Caesar in his northward march in Gaul, with six
legions (7th, 8th, 9th,10th,11th, 12th), encountered
the powerful infantry of the massed tribes of the
Belgic Celts - the Nervii, Viromandui, and the
Atrebates at the River Sambre (300,000 warriors).
He broke the back of the Gallic resistance, but
elevated Commius the Atrebatian as tribal king
instead of executing him, a tribute to his courage
and resourcefulness.

Commius served Caesar as his ambassador to
Britain prior to landing on the Kent coast in 55BC
with the 7th and 10th legions.
