'Beyond Driven' CD Times, CD OF THE WEEK !!!: Wow. The only record in this shameful pile that made me raise my eyebrows, that made me vaguely curious, The Crucible lovingly get all Seattle 1992 on us. Not my bag particularly, but I don’t mind dipping my toe in on occasion. Because they seem young but capable and possibly capable of getting all ambitious on us as they develop, they get my vote. ‘Beyond Driven’ reminds me very much of early Alice in Chains with a bit of ‘Superunknown’-era Soundgarden lobbed in. The vocals are good and given half a chance in front of, say, an unsuspecting Download crowd, they’d probably cause a bit of a buzz. Nicely understated, too, The Crucible – crap name aside – sound like they’re a cut above. |
