Setti Mulari has been around, it appears, since the dinosaurs
roamed the earth. Will he ever graduate? His colourful
conduct has calmed down with age but he still appears to flare up
at any given opportunity. We managed to find Setti before
Christmas at Bisley Arena trying to learn how to referee
properly... with minimal success.
| Question 1: Hello Setti, you're at
university far away from home, where do you see yourself in,
say, 5 years time? Setti: Should the Gods be on my side,
I would've graduated by then. |
| Question 2: Who do you look up to in
Inline Hockey? Setti: There's a few people I think are
good characters in hockey today... Joni is just beyond awesome
at hockey, Jae Paxman is also another Portsmouth great. I'm
very proud of having played at the Bauer Bandits with Mootang,
Floody, Wazza, Rici and Boner among others. In management side
I have great respect for Paul Child, Ron Diaper and Dawn
Bonathan at GBHIS... (thanks, Setti... that's plenty) ... I
got more... (look, Setti, it's not an Oscar winner's thank-you
speech... we're moving on...) |
| Question 3: Who taught you to play Inline
Hockey? How did you get involved? Setti: I used to play
ice in Finland, I wasn't very good though. When I came to
England I was forced to join the Roller Hockey Club at
Portsmouth Uni by Chris Gordon and Jae Paxman... it's their
fault I'm here now! |
| Question 4: How often do you train and
what kind of training do you do? Setti: Social nights
are pretty good in our team... I'm a bit of a light-weight tho
so I must put a bit more effort into that. |
| Question 5: Describe your playing style.
Setti: Headless Chicken is a pretty good comparison, one could
say. Some also say that I got too big of a mouth for a bloke
of my size. I tend to aggravate the opposition with my own "Tiki-talk"...
needless to say I get my ass kicked every now and then. |
| Question 6: Puck or Ball? Which one is
better? Setti: Puck, of course. Ball hockey is not
hockey... it's nearly as low as Field Hockey and that's just
beyond queer... can I say queer on this? |
| Question 7: How do you get psyched up
before games? Setti: Last season I'd make a gazillion
phone calls waking everybody up, then I'd pick them up, make
sure they're ready and drive them to the game. By the time
team was ready to play I was ready for a drink! Much easier
this season, I just haul my own arse to the game. |
| Question 8: What is your best asset in the
game and what would you like to improve? Setti: I
suppose I draw a lot of attention of the opposition to me and
that leaves more room for the rest of the team to do their
thing... I would like to actually learn how to play the game. |
| Question 9: What is your most memorable
moment in Inline Hockey? Setti: Winning the GBHIS
Southern with the Bandits was pretty cool, but number one has
to be beating the Hornets at the Ross Hayward Cup finals last
season. |
| Question 10: What are your thoughts on
Inline Hockey in the UK? Setti: I'd like to see the
associations merge and more purpose built venues. In the last
three years, I've seen great improvements but there's a long
way to go. |
| Question 11: What do you think of the new
setting of university hockey in the UK? Setti: It is
absolutely wicked. In theory slightly smoother than in
reality, but well worth the effort that myself and a couple of
others, like Jo Medcalf and Mark Seccombe, are going through. |
| Question 12: Your greetings to the
readers... Setti: I may not know much about hockey, but
I do know that the points per game record that Joni stole from
me will return to me soon! Watch out Vikings! |
