Are you legal to tow a trailer?

If you passed your car driving test after January 1997 (including re-tests), you now need to pass a separate test (licence category B + E) for towing a trailer or caravan weighing over 750kg M.A.M. (Maximum Authorised Mass). Most horse boxes, cattle trailers and caravans weigh this much unladen.
The Trailer Towing Test (B + E) is based on the LGV driving test and includes all aspects of towing trailers as well as general on road techniques. In preparation for the test, the courses cover off-road manoeuvring and reversing, a controlled stop, hitching and un-hitching, the theory of loading and un-loading and also securing the load.
The trailer training also includes an on-road assessment to cover the allowances required above and beyond your standard road driving techniques. The braking, reversing and uncoupling/recoupling exercises will be undertaken off road.
The majority of people who fail the B+E Test do so because their road driving skills do not meet the required standards.
