The Bromborough Festival was founded in 1949 to " encourage the study of Music and the Arts and to stimulate the interest of the public in an appreciation of the Performing Arts ". Today we are a Registered Charity and the Committee is responsible for the planning and organisation of a competitive festival every year designed as a performance friendly environment for competitors of all ages with skills in one or more of the Performing Arts. The festival takes place in the months of March and April each year, you can check next year's dates here. As a Member of the British Federation of Festivals we have well known and very experienced adjudicators, in each section, and assessment standards are totally impartial. The Federation web site offers a comprehensive listing of their member Festivals, but we would direct you to the web site of the Penwortham (Preston) Youth Music Festival for a listing of Competitive Arts Festivals in the North West of England
![]() What do we do? For these 50 years Bromborough has been the home of one of the most challenging of competitive Arts Festivals to be found in the area. Youngsters, and much more mature performers with particular skills in Oratory or in making Music compete each Springtime , just for the challenge, and perhaps, as a winner, to be presented with a Silver Trophy for the mantel-piece. As the organisers we see standards of performance which grow in stature each year, and we often regret after the event, that apart from parents and friends, just a few local residents visit our Festival simply for its entertainment value. In former years The Wirral Peninsula sported several competitive Arts Festivals, not unlike the Welsh Eisteddfordau, and perhaps influenced by that Celtic culture on our doorstep. Regrettably the Wallasey Music Festival ,the Pensby Festival, and all the others have faded away leaving the Bromborough Festival as the only one remaining on the Wirral. This is the reason why in 2003, as Liverpool ( our neighbour) prepares to assume the mantle of The City of Culture in 2008, we are changing the name of our festival to demonstrate that we more fully represent the whole of our area. ![]() Funding ! Let us say straight away that the Festival is a non profit making operation, we are indeed fortunate if we succeed in balancing the annual budget . We have more than 1,000 contestants every year, and some of our costs must be covered by their entry fees and by the modest admission fees and programme sales. We are heavily dependent on the goodwill , the time and financial support of a stalwart band of Patrons, and we are immensely grateful to many companies in our locality who offer generous financial support.
The Venue! In the Spring of 2006 we move back to the premises of The Birkenhead High School for Girls in Devonshire Place, Birkenhead and we must thank the head teacher and her staff for making us so welcome there. The Dance Section We are very sorry to announce that after a 3 year search, we have found it impossible to appoint an Organising Committee for the Dance section of our Festival, which will therefore be discontinued. Why not join us ? As a Contestant , A Teacher, A Parent or an occasional member of our Audience we can promise you a warm welcome, and we believe that you would find a visit to our festival both rewarding and entertaining.
