ACTIVITIES

After the outdoor meeting of 13th October 2002 to establish whether there were enough people interested in forming a volunteer group that want to maintain and improve the Woods, several events have taken place.

bulletThe first project was to collect litter in the Cutting and reinstate the area of bluebell woods dug up to the south of Thornhill Drive which had been made into a bike track with ramps. Jack Foster, the Kirkstall Valley Ranger, kindly continued this work with a group of Community Service workers.
bulletThe next project on 27th October 2002 was a litter pick in Wood Lane and around Church School. There was a good turn out considering the persistent rain — mountains of rubbish and glass were taken away — thanks to everyone for working so hard on such a wet day.
bulletOn the 2nd and 29th March 2003, clearups of the Fagley Beck area took place. A tremendous amount of rubbish was removed, including a supermarket trolley (see the picture in the Gallery).
bulletOn 2nd May 2003, a further clear up of Wood Lane and Thornhill Drive took place, around Calverley Church of England School. The weather was kind and some extremely interesting articles of litter were uncovered, including a full bottle of Cinzano and a single walking boot!
bulletA Committee Meeting was held on 6th May 2003 at Calverley Conservative Club. On arrival, a tree opposite the club had been set alight by local youths - this required the local fire brigade to be called out to deal with the fire - an interesting start to proceedings.
bulletFriends of Calverley Woods supported the Tree Council's Walk in the Woods, sponsored by Center Parcs, by organising a guided woodland walk and talk on Sunday 18th May, led by Jack Foster (Kirkstall Valley Ranger) and Brian Bottomley of the RSPB. The many people who took part enjoyed a pleasant and informative walk, and also received a Flower Guide and Bluebell Information booklet supplied by Plantlife. FoCW intend to take part in a Bluebell survey being arranged by Plantlife. For more information, visit The Tree Council Walk in The Woods and the Plantlife web pages.

FORESTRY DEPARTMENT

Justin Williamson, a representative of the Forestry Department of Leeds City Council walked the Woods with some members on 17th March 2003. Justin provided useful advice on ways of maintaining and improving the Wood which will be invaluable when the lease is agreed.

VOLUNTEER WORK DAYS

Walling — Recently a few dedicated volunteers (or crazy people…) repaired one of the stone walls at the top of the cutting on a snowy day… There was a lot of coffee flowing and standards were relaxed a little as we re-built a section of wall in between two horrible leaning walls.

Balsam Bashing — last year we began this project i.e. to control this weed which is encroaching on the Bluebell Woods. Just by harming the leaves, stops its growth, so it is quite a light job to do—but one of great value. Look around—each year it takes over new areas—see schedule of dates and come and join the fun.

Litter-picking/Fencing — we still have some fencing to complete and unfortunately will always have rubbish to clear up—it is quite bad again around Calverley C of E School. We now have our own litter-picking tools—so check out the dates below and check out our new equipment.
