The van der Bergs hail from the Freiboden League (previously the Golden Nation of Mill'en). Johannes and Hugh are the sons of Jakob van der Berg, a Free Merchant, Lydia is Johannes' wife.
During the recent revolution Johannes was sent by Jakob to join the Raddock Bay trading house in order to ease the flow of supplies to the revolution. After the revolution Hugh joined Johannes in Raddock Bay.
With the opening of the Maelstrom a decision was made to go through to see this new world and the wonders it has to offer.
