Kingston

The village of Kingston is screened with woods and, standing at a height of over 400ft is seen far and wide.

It is remarkable for its two churches: one disused, built in 1838 by Lord Chancellor Eldon to designs by his son-in-law, Repton.

The other is quite elaborate, built in 1880 by the 3rd Earl of Eldon, architect G E Street, and which resembles a miniature early English cathedral.

The tower dominates the landscape and inside, the clustered pillars and other details are of Purbeck marble, quarried from Lord Eldon’s estate and worked by his own craftsmen.

Until 1877, Kingston was a chapelry of Corfe Castle.

The Online Parish Clerk (OPC) for Kingston is Martin White.

Further material will be posted to this site as it is transcribed.
