All You Need
is Love
Director Tony Palmer's epic
series of 17 x 50 minute films which set out to tell the story of popular
music. Pretty hard going at times and some of it hasn't dated particularly
well, the late 1960's and 1970's rock era is portrayed in a negative light
as the programmes were made at a time when the party was over and everybody
was feeling burned out and depressed at what the music business had turned
into. The actual footage from the classic rock era is mostly culled from
Palmer's 1968 documentary "All My Loving" - so you're much better off watching
that instead if it's just the rock era you're interested in.

Years of
Lightning
Not specifically to do with
music but an important series nonetheless. Produced by ATV, each episode
looked back at one particular year. The films had no commentary, the essence
of the year being captured through newsreel clips, newspaper headlines
and images. The BBC copied the format for a series of their own a few years
later, though with more focus on music.

The Roots
of Rock 'n' Roll
An American TV series which
found its way onto British screens via various regional slots 1983-86.
It was not the greatest televisual history of Rock by any stretch of the
imagination, but in the days before the home-video boom we were grateful
for anything. Show 4 (hosted by Rod Stewart) supposedly dealt with the
psychedelic era featuring present day contributions from The Fifth Dimension,
Jan and Dean, The Four Tops, Roy Orbison and Barry White - which will give
you a good indication of what we had to sit through just to see a few brief
archive clips of Jimi Hendrix and The Doors.
First broadcast in the USA 1981 (or early 1982).

Sounds of
the Sixties
A series of unedited BBC
performances interwoven with various continuity clips, TV programme title
sequences, weather reports etc. to give an overall flavour of the period.
It quickly became apparent that a fair percentage of the performances had
only been included on the strength of arbitrarily surviving the systematic
tape wiping policy employed by the BBC in the 1960's and early 1970's -
Had every edition of "Top of the Pops", "Late Night Line Up" etc. been
preserved, the selections would have been very different for sure, but
fans of '60s rock were still grateful for this series at the time as many
of the more celebrated clips had not been shown in full on British television
since the original broadcasts.
Dates given for each performance are for the original transmission.
