Up the Maggies note:
County's biggest ever opening day of the season victory came after an incredible pre-season which saw Sven-Goran Eriksson installed as Director of Football by the new owners and 12,040 turn up at Meadow Lane to watch Notts beat Forest 2-1 in a friendly. Pre-match publicity for the opening league match was fever pitch as the Magpies entertained one of the bookies favourites for promotion. The crowd more than doubled the previous season's average and they saw Notts romp to a 3-0 half-time lead, Ben Davies headed in Luke Rodgers' cross for the first, Lee Hughes rounded the goalkeeper for no.2 and Hughes then forced Craig Westcarr's cross over the line to make it three. Hughes completed his hat-trick early in the 2nd half from the penalty spot after Matt Clarke had brought down Luke Rodgers. Finally, right-back Brendan Moloney - on loan from Forest - showed great skill in the area before firing home goal number five. Nine players made their County debuts, three of them grabbing the goals.
