HARDING STRIKES IT RICH
By David Stapleton
PAUL HARDING could give Notts County a New Year boost by coming off
the transfer list. Harding was outstanding in his new striker's role as
Notts moved out of the bottom three with yesterday's efficient 2-0 home
win over Chelsea. And he has hinted that his reason for wanting to move
can be overturned. Manager Neil Warnock said after naming an unchanged
13 for tomorrow's visit of fellow-strugglers West Ham United: "When Paul
plays like he did against Chelsea, he changes his mind for you. He's like
a little kid with a new toy. You want to see him in training - everybody
knows how I rate Craig Short but he hates playing against Harding. Since
Paul joined us from Barnet 15 months ago, he's been telling me he has a
lot more skill than I've given him credit for. Now he's in the side on
merit, because Paul Rideout was available again. Harding also worked hard,
as did strike partner Tony Agana. Agana has now gone seven games without
scoring
his first goal for the club, but he kept his head up. I've told him that
things will turn for him if he continues like that. The crowd have been
super with him, chanting his name yesterday. I was also pleased with the
attitude of Tommy Johnson, who deserved his first goal for seven matches."
Warnock had more praise for midfield captain Phil Turner, Charlie Palmer
and Chris Short. He said: "I don't think it's any coincidence that since
Turner came back into the side, and did well at Tottenham, we have turned
in three good performances. Palmer never put a foot wrong and Short did
a great job against Wise. It was lovely to get our first three points since
the Oldham game on November 2, but we made hard work of it. The number
of chances we had, it wouldn't have been an injustice to win 5-0."
Quote by Chelsea manager Ian Porterfield: “We didn't start urgently
enough. Then we allowed ourselves to get sucked into County's style of
football. We also gave away another silly goal.”
Up
the Maggies footnote:
County took the lead from a corner - Johnson short to
Turner, a deep cross, Yates with the header, Goal! 1-0. Charlie Palmer
put Tommy Johnson clear to make it 2-0. Harding and Agana had great chances
to extend Notts lead whilst Vinny Jones lived up to his villainous reputation.
Chelsea sub Kevin Wilson joined Notts later in the season.
