Up
the Maggies footnote:
Although this was officially the final day of the league
campaign, both clubs still had an outstanding fixture re-arranged for the
following mid-week (this being in the days before it was compulsory for
all clubs to complete their fixtures on the final weekend - It was still
not uncommon for some teams to play on for weeks after the final Saturday).
Liverpool came to Meadow Lane requiring a victory to secure 1st place,
but it turned out that a draw was enough as 2nd placed Manchester United
could only draw 1-1 at Spurs. Notts' relegation had already been mathematically
confirmed on the previous Bank holiday Monday when County only managed
a draw at Sunderland, that match also saw on-loan defender Ken Armstrong
make his final appearance in a County shirt, Notts would try to sign him
permanently at the start of next season but he chose to join Birmingham
City instead.
