Up
the Maggies footnote:
County's 1-0 defeat at 3rd bottom Stoke City the previous
Saturday was enough to convince most that Notts could no longer avoid relegation.
County were now a massive 11 points adrift of safety, although the team
now occupying 4th bottom (West Brom) were County's next opponents at home
and Notts also had a game in hand. When Christie fired Notts into the lead
with a 2nd half penalty there was a flicker of hope, but Albion cruelly
equalised with the last kick of the game - an extremely depressing moment.
Perhaps Notts had let their concentration slip with one eye on next Saturday's
FA Cup quarter final. Nobody who was at Meadow Lane on the day, including
the players, were aware that General Manager Jimmy Sirrel had lost his
wife to sudden tragic circumstances only the night before the West Brom
game, yet he still turned up to carry out his usual matchday duties without
telling anybody what had happened until after the game was over.
