Up
the Maggies footnote:
Notts progressed to the Quarter-finals of the FA Cup
for the first time in 29 years (1955) thanks to a superb individual goal
by John Chiedozie who ran on to a long ball on the left wing, beat two
defenders and placed his shot into the corner of the Meadow Lane end net.
I was stood right at the front of County Road where Chiedozie picked the
ball up and so had a great view of it, ironically I'd been forced to move
to that spot from my regular position after hundreds of Middlesbrough fans
in the away end decided to climb over the fences into where X block now
is to engage in a massive fight with our fans before the match began, I
remember grown men being sent tumbling down the steps and landing at my
feet before one of the County combatants finally conceded "There's too
many of 'em!" and that seemed to be the cue for us all to make a retreat
further along County Road leaving the Boro fans behind to celebrate their
successful invasion. Happily it was us who were celebrating at the final
whistle. Middlesbrough went on to sack manager Malcom Allison at the end
of March and finished 17th in the old 2nd division. In spite of our poor
position in the league, there was a genuine belief that we could go all
the way in the FA Cup as the big clubs (Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal, Spurs,
West Ham and Villa) had all been knocked out. The other Quarter-finalists
included 3rd division Plymouth, 2nd tier clubs Derby County & Sheffield
Wednesday and fellow 'unfashionable' top flight teams Watford, Luton Town
and Birmingham City. The two to avoid were Everton and Southampton, yet
having been drawn against lower league opposition in all of the previous
rounds, I suppose we couldn't really complain about being paired up with
Everton on our own patch.
