Up
the Maggies footnote:
This ought to have been an easy passage into the 4th
round for Notts as the Robins were now three divisions below the Magpies
(following three successive relegations after losing their top flight status
only 4 years earlier). The tie was evidently a big deal for City who brought
an impressive following, but unfortunately they turned out to be the worst
behaved fans I'd had the displeasure of witnessing up to that point (it
was my first cup match as well as my first Sunday Meadow Lane outing) -
They threw coins at us and, unable to provoke a reaction, they then decided
to start fighting amongst themselves and then the police. It was no surprise
to see Bristol City hooligans making the headlines later in the season
at Reading in April where their manager Terry Cooper made a tannoy threat
to concede the points if they didn't behave themselves. As for this 3rd
round FA Cup tie, City took a surprise lead before Christie equalised with
a penalty, Christie then put Notts ahead shortly after half-time but City
equalised to take the tie to a replay at Ashton Gate - which took place
two days later in front of easily their biggest crowd of the season. Notts
made no mistakes this time however and won 2-0.
