Up
the Maggies footnote:
Notts had entertained Birmingham City yet again on the
Monday night in a 3rd replay in the League Cup Third round, a 3-1 win for
the Blues finally brought the tie to a conclusion. Two days before that,
County had travelled to QPR - Glenn Roeder's current club, Rangers wanted
£150,000 for him and the Notts chairman Jack Dunnett announced that
he would put up half of the money if supporters could raise the rest, which
prompted the embarrassing "Buy Glenn Roeder appeal" (school friends really
took the piss out of me over that). Roeder didn't play in the QPR match
(for either side) and was now back at Rangers with his loan period expired,
Notts made the journey back up to Nottingham without any points either
as QPR won 1-0. Sunderland arrived in Nottingham on 10th December having
taken 10 points from their last four away league games and 6 of those points
had been won at Arsenal and Liverpool! But they found that even Pedro Richards
had his shooting boots on at Meadow Lane as County ran riot, following
up the 5-2 home win over Villa with this startling 6-1 victory (Notts biggest
win margin since beating Hull City 5-0 nine years earlier). What a shame
so few were there to see it as County suffered their lowest Saturday crowd
since the promotion season (more people had turned up for the Monday night
3rd replay with Birmingham!). Sunderland sacked manager Alan Durban later
in the season on 2nd March.
