the Maggies footnote:
Although it was still only October, it was already becoming
desperate - Notts had just equalled a club record of seven straight league
defeats at, of all places, the City ground. Stoke were only two points
better off and one place above Notts (and the drop zone), so this fixture
was a must win 6 pointer. The visitors had recently arrested a losing sequence
of their own and came to Meadow Lane unbeaten in their last three, Notts
were missing John Chiedozie but Pedro Richards was making his first appearance
in the starting 11 this season. With Notts attacking the Kop end in the
2nd half, Brian Kilcline put County ahead after a long corner from the
left was somehow kept in play by David Hunt who lobbed it back into the
box where it eventually fell for Kilcline, "Killer" was able to stick out
a boot and volley it home from close range. Sadly Notts were unable to
hang on to the lead and Steve Bould (who would later join Arsenal) equalised
to ensure that Notts stayed in the bottom three. However, it wouldn't be
long before Stoke found themselves in the drop zone and on 9th December
manager Richie Barker (a former popular Notts player) was sacked. Within
a year, Richie Barker would be manager of Notts County.
