Midweek Football
Coverage
1955/56 - 1967/68
Midweek football during the early days of commercial television was usually networked live 2nd half coverage with some broadcasts being of games played on a weekday afternoon (Floodlights still something of a novelty in the mid-1950's and live 2nd half coverage having become the established procedure on radio). Youth and Under-23 matches were also a fairly common feature of the black & white era*, indeed the first known live football to be televised by ITV was a Junior Cup Final (described by Danny Blanchflower who was still playing for Tottenham Hotspur and Northern Ireland at the time**). Kent Walton, who would become the voice of wrestling on ITV, probably commentated on the early midweek FA Cup ties whilst Gerry Loftus likely did the games played in the North once Granada TV took to the air in May 1956. Hugh Johns came to the fore in the run up to the re-structuring of ITV in 1968, a period which also saw Barry Davies replace Gerry Loftus.
* Televised Youth and Under-23 matches
are listed on our 'Extra Time' page here.
** Danny Blanchflower later became
a regular commentator for Yorkshire Television, though he only lasted for
one season.
Midweek internationals, Cup finals and European finals
are dealt with on separate pages
