European Nations Cup 1964
29 of the 32 European member nations entered the 2nd European Nations Cup tournament with England, Wales and Northern Ireland all taking part for the first time. Scotland, West Germany and Finland did not enter. The draw for the preliminary round took place in Zurich on 10th January 1962 (with the team drawn first in each tie having the choice of whether to play at home or away in the 1st leg). Greece decided to withdraw after being paired up with Albania with whom they were officially at war, the latter going straight through to the last 16 along with holders the Soviet Union (who were exempted from the preliminary round) and Austria and Luxembourg who both drew byes. England were drawn against France and the 2nd leg turned out to be Alf Ramsey's first match as manager, but they lost 6-3 on aggregate.
Spain, after overcoming Romania in the preliminary round, then Northern Ireland in the last 16 and the Republic of Ireland in the quarter-finals*, were selected to host both semi-finals, the 3rd place play-off and the final - conditional on them accepting the participation of the Soviet Union, whom Spain had refused to play against in the previous tournament. The pair ultimately met in the final and it was the hosts who emerged as the victors.
*Despite the Republic of Ireland losing the QF 1st leg in Spain 5-1, RTE showed the 2nd leg live with Phillip Greene commentating. The 2nd leg was also lost (2-0).
ITV games are in white, BBC or non-televised matches
are in grey.
All matches were broadcast in black & white.

still exists with George Davidson commentating. Three players made their
Scotland debuts, David Holt of Hearts, David Gibson of Leicester City and
James Millar of Rangers. Two goals by David Wilson on 10 and 20 gave Scotland
a 2-0 lead, but the Austrians vehemently protested the 2nd goal and, after
the re-start, Nemec was sent off for spitting at the referee, but he refused
to leave the field and there were heated exchanges down by the benches
before Nemec eventually departed. A Denis Law goal on 28 gave Scotland
a 3-0 HT lead, Law added another on 71 and Anton Linhart netted a consolation
for Austria on 72 but Hof then became the 2nd Austria player to be sent
off for a "diabolical waistline foul" and an Austrian reserve had to be
stopped by a policeman from attacking the referee, Hof remained adamantly
on the field for some 3 minutes as players and officials argued. Finally,
on 79 minutes, after a bad foul by Law on Linhart (who had to be carried
off) referee James Finney from Hereford abandoned the game due to persistent
fouling; "I stopped the game because there was no saying how it was going
to end. It was getting completely out of hand, somebody might have been
seriously injured." Most of the 94,596 crowd remained in place for 10 minutes
afterwards hoping the game would resume until a police announcement confirmed
that the game had been abandoned.
