Anglia Television Football Highlights
This page has been written & compiled by Mark Bunn
The two year TV deal signed in July 1983 saw the end of ITV regional football in the form that had served the armchair fan since 1968 (and in Anglia since 1962).  ITV were now allowed to show networked live league matches from October 1983 plus networked highlights. "About Anglia" also sent a single camera to selected matches for Monday news goals reports for local games not covered by full highlights. Ipswich Town did not appear on ITV at all during 1983/84, whilst Norwich City's 6-1 win over Watford was shown on The Big Match with Brian Moore commentating, as was the Canaries FA Cup 5th round defeat at Derby County. Luton Town were shown live in February 1984 taking a 5-0 hammering by Manchester United. There were further Norwich appearances the following season with the home games against Watford (again) and Newcastle, whilst the League Cup Semi-Final 2nd leg between Norwich and Ipswich at Carrow Road saw the return of Gerry Harrison, City's win that night led to their first ever live TV appearance in the final against Sunderland (shown on the BBC).
The dreadful events at the end of that season (including a riot at the Luton Town v Millwall FA Cup Quarter-final) culminated with the Heysel disaster which saw all English teams banned from Europe until 1990, it was harsh on Norwich who should have been playing in the UEFA Cup in 1985/86 (in spite of suffering relegation) due to their Wembley League Cup final win.

TV blackout
Following a TV football black-out during 1985/86, an interim deal allowed for coverage of the second half of that season and on 5th April 1986 the Anglia cameras and commentator Gerry Harrison returned to Carrow Road to cover Norwich v Brighton & Hove Albion in what turned out to be a promotion winning season, the footage was shown after Liverpool v Southampton FA Cup Semi-final highlights on Sunday afternoon. Harrison was at Portman Road three weeks later as Ipswich Town fought a relegation six-pointer against Oxford United, the game was shown under The Big Match banner on Saturday night along with highlights of Liverpool v Birmingham and Nottingham Forest v Everton.
In the summer of 1986 ITV and the BBC signed a two year live match deal which also allowed for highlights of league games, but it was left to the individual regions to decide whether or not to bother. The BBC took the decision to suspend Match of the Day as a regular highlights show, it only now appeared on FA Cup 4th and 6th round day in its' traditional Saturday night slot. During 1986/87 Anglia showed a number of games either as The Big Match or Soccer Special. Luton and Norwich enjoyed successful seasons (both finishing in the top seven) and, although neither side were shown live on ITV, they did feature in a few highlights packages on Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons, as did Ipswich Town who had been relegated to the 2nd tier. 1987/88 followed much the same pattern with intermittent highlights shown from region to region, whilst over on BBC1 Match of the Day did cover a few more Saturday matches. In April 1988 Luton Town became the third Anglia club to lift major silverware within ten years as the Hatters beat Arsenal 3-2 (live on ITV) in one of the most thrilling League Cup finals of all time.

Exclusive deal for ITV
In the summer of 1988, ITV signed an exclusive deal with the Football League and but coverage was now largely focussed on the big five (Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton) although Norwich made a genuine title bid and featured in three live league games that season, there were only a handful of highlights programmes.
At the start of the 1989/90 season, Anglia re-introduced Sunday afternoon highlights as East Anglian Soccer Special with highlights of Norwich City v Tottenham Hotspur, but the show only ran for six weeks before the resumption of live networked matches (Norwich were featured live twice that season), highlights returned towards the end of the campaign to cover a few more local games, a similar combination of local highlights and networked live games was repeated the following season.

"Goals Galore"
For 1991/92 Anglia announced a new show that would run every Sunday lunchtime around 12.30 called Goals Galore, this would feature highlights of one local game plus a goals round-up of the games featuring the region's other teams. Norwich and Luton were still in the top flight, and Ipswich, Cambridge and Southend all in the 2nd tier. Peterborough United were also promoted via a Wembley Play-off final v Stockport and highlights of this were shown that night on Anglia.

Losing the rights to the top flight
Shortly after the end of the season in May 1992 it was announced that SKY had won exclusive rights to the new FA Premier League. ITV then signed an exclusive deal with the Football League to cover the 2nd, 3rd & 4th tiers and League Cup ties on a regional basis. Despite Norwich City and Ipswich Town now being in the Premier League, Anglia still had four clubs in the 2nd tier; Luton Town, Cambridge United, Peterborough United and Southend United, and it was assumed by most that Anglia would show regular coverage of these clubs, unfortunately that didn’t prove to be the case. It was announced in August that Goals Galore had been cancelled because they were unable to show Norwich and Ipswich games. With the majority of the other regions showing live games on a weekly basis, Anglia viewers had to wait until mid-October for the first live Football when they showed Central coverage of Leicester City v Peterborough United, and then Southend United v Cambridge United a week later, the local derby between Luton Town and Watford followed in November and that was it until April! Even when Peterborough United were covered (home and away) by Central and Southend United by LWT, Anglia decided to show films instead. As the end of the season approached, and after massive viewer pressure, Anglia finally relented and started showing live games - the first being LWT coverage of West Ham United v Leicester City with highlights of Peterborough United v Cambridge United (played the day before with Gerry Harrison commentating). On the final Saturday of the season highlights were shown at 5.15 on the Saturday evening of the game between West Ham United and Cambridge United (with Gerry Harrison commentating from Upton Park), this was also shown on LWT. Tony Jones, who was being groomed to replace Harrison as Anglia’s commentator was at Southend United for their game against Luton Town. Anglia then bizarrely showed all this action again the next afternoon, before the live second half of Newcastle United v Leicester City. Gerry Harrison was later to admit that Anglia’s coverage during the previous season had been a mistake and that they should have shown more games, but the executives above him had over-ruled him.

Gerry Harrison leaves Anglia
Harrison left Anglia in November 1993 for an American company producing Champions League and World Cup coverage*. The role of presenting was taken up by Kevin Piper, with Tony Jones now the regular commentator. Anglia attempted to find the middle-ground during the 1993/94 season, they started with a live game on the first Sunday of the season showing Southend United v Nottingham Forest (as did LWT, Meridian and Central) and then showed live games almost every other week from October (with films being shown on non-football Sundays). But there were still problems - For example, it was printed in the TV listings, newspapers etc. that the West Bromwich Albion v Wolverhampton Wanderers game was going to be shown live, only for it to pulled at the last moment for no apparent reason and replaced by a 1950’s Doris Day film prompting a letter to the “Norwich Evening News” which referred to ITV's advertising slogan; "Football’s free on ITV", adding "...if they bother to show it of course!!!!!".  In spite of Cambridge United's relegation, Anglia still had three teams in the 2nd tier; Luton, Peterborough and Southend, and all were shown live during the season as well as Anglia picking up the Central TV games when not showing a local match.
The Anglia cameras travelled to Wembley in May 1994 to cover the FA Vase Final between Norfolk team Diss Town and Taunton Town. As with the previous year's Cambridge game, highlights were shown at Saturday tea-time, and then almost the whole match was shown on Sunday afternoon (despite them being billed to show the LWT game between Crystal Palace and Watford).
*Gerry Harrison continued to cover the occasional match as a freelancer for another three seasons, his last game for Anglia would be the 14th April 1996 derby match between Ipswich and Norwich.

"Kick Off"
During the summer of 1994, Anglia announced that it had listened to the criticism over its coverage of the previous two seasons and decided to launch a weekly show from October called Kick-Off, described by Kevin Piper as Match of the Week for the 1990’s. When not showing a live match, extended highlights of a local game would be shown instead. Co-presenting would be the former Ipswich Town striker Alan Brazil (This would be the show that would launch Brazil’s career in the media). During the season, all of the local sides Anglia were able to cover were shown (Luton, Southend, Peterborough, Cambridge, Colchester and Northampton). On November 12th cameras covered the game between Watford and Southend United at Vicarage Road for Kick-Off with Garry Bloom commentating.
*Watford was just outside Anglia’s area, but if you had an aerial in the right direction in the north of the town, you could get very fuzzy pictures from Anglia. LWT were covering a Charlton game live the next day and it was assumed that they would show some of the highlights of the Anglia game (at the game it was announced “watch the highlights tomorrow afternoon”) but all that was shown on LWT was the goal voiced-over in a brief report.

Norwich & Ipswich drop into the 2nd tier
Kick-Off carried on for the duration of 1995/96 and benefited from Ipswich and Norwich dropping back into the 2nd tier. In November 1995 Anglia were able to cover a derby game live for the first time. The issue of Luton Town and Southend United being shared with LWT reared its head again a number of times during that season - On the opening Sunday of the season, Anglia covered the Luton home game against Norwich City, but LWT refused joint coverage, then they showed Luton Town when Anglia showed a Norwich game, but refused to let Anglia have pictures of the game to show at half-time and full-time, and the same happened when Southend United v Crystal Palace was shown on LWT and Meridian when Anglia were covering Norwich v Ipswich. Just before Christmas, Anglia were at Luton Town for a live game against Wolverhampton Wanderers but LWT decided against showing this game. When the contract came up for renewal at the end of that season, the petty bickering between LWT and Anglia could not have helped ITV’S bid, and it was SKY who took the contract ending ITV's era of regular live league match coverage. Anglia were one of the few to continue to bother with regional highlights from October 1996 onwards* (still under the Kick-Off banner), Peterborough United Manager Barry Fry was now chief pundit having replaced Alan Brazil who had left for SKY.
*Networked highlights/goals round-ups could be watched late Monday night/Tuesday morning from 1994 to 2001.

"Soccer Sunday" & "Anglia Soccer Night"
Norwich City struggled in mid-table during the late 1990's whilst Ipswich Town missed out in the play-off semi-finals for three consecutive seasons before winning the last play-off final to be held at the old Wembley in 2000. ITV's new football contract, beginning with 2001/02 (which included Premier League highlights), saw the return of regional Sunday afternoon football to all areas under the collective banner of Soccer Sunday, the half hour shows being individually produced by the main ITV regional stations to cover the 2nd, 3rd & 4th tiers, but the quality varied from region to region. The same title was also retained for a handful of regional live games, otherwise live 2nd, 3rd and 4th tier fixtures were screened on the new digital ITV Sport Channel, a short lived subscription service which was closed at the end of the season, the 2nd tier final between Norwich City and Birmingham City was networked live - this, to date, was the last time a Play-off Final was shown live by ITV. SKY then stepped in and resumed live coverage of the lower leagues in 2002/03, ITV eventually a signed a deal for highlights which returned at the start of November. From 2004/05 the regional variations of Soccer Sunday were dropped and replaced by a networked show called The Championship broadcast on Sunday mornings which mostly concentrated on the 2nd tier, regional football coverage was banished to a late night mid-week round-up slot called Soccer night (usually pre-fixed by the region producing it) which lasted until the end of 2007/08.
