Beatles UK Cassettes Home Page

Introduction
This page was written with the assumption that the reader is familiar
with each individual Beatle's solo catalogue (up to the point that their
contract with EMI ended in 1976) and that the history
of the Beatles Cassettes page has been read first.
My own personal collection of solo cassettes can be counted on one
hand. At the time I began collecting solo albums in 1983, I made a conscious
decision to switch to vinyl as it immediately became apparent that I would
struggle to complete the collection if I'd stuck with tape (George &
Ringo albums were hard enough to find on vinyl at that time). Therefore,
much of the information presented on this page has been gleaned from ebay
scans and e-mails from visitors to this site (a big Macca style thumbs
up to them!). As with the Beatles cassettes, EMI changed the track running
orders on many solo tapes, yet - annoying as this practice must have been
at the time - it does add to the novelty value today, some cassettes even
changed the cover design!
*The cover photo on the cassette (and reel to reel tape) version of
McCartney
was the image of Paul and his daughter Mary which appeared on the back
cover of the vinyl jacket.
**All Things Must Pass was issued on two separate tapes housed
in individual cases and presented in a carton box (with a fold-in top to
shut it). The inlay covers feature only a section of the vinyl sleeve so
that George can clearly be seen.
***The most interesting solo cassette from this period is the first
edition of Imagine which was originally issued in a flip top cardboard
box (like a cigarette packet) housing the cassette mounted on a 9" x 7"
card copy of the album cover, the card also gives a breakdown of the musicians.
This version of the cassette was only available for a few months before
it was replaced with a standard white inlay version.
The Concert For Bangla Desh (1972)
It appears that as part of the distribution agreement
to release
The Concert For Bangla Desh in the USA, LP production/distribution
was handled by Capitol but all tape formats were handled by CBS. In the
UK it appears that all format production/distribution was handled by CBS,
the cassettes may have been shipped over from the USA for UK release -
These were issued in a carton box (side opening with a fold in to shut
the box), the catalogue number was Apple ZTX 31230.
All Gold Inlays (1971-73)
Solo Beatle
albums known to have been issued in the 'all gold' style include re-issues
of McCartney, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Ram, Imagine and
Wild Life.
New albums to be issued in all gold were Some Time in
New York City*,
Living in the Material World and Red Rose
Speedway.
*As with All Things Must Pass, the Some Time in New York City album was issued as a pair of cassettes housed in two separate cases (in the days before double cassette cases were invented). There is also a change of cover picture for the inlays - the studio cassette inlay has a picture of John, Yoko and Elephant's Memory, whilst the Live Jam cassette has a reproduction of the handwritten John & Yoko/Mothers of Invention inner sleeve, the cassettes were presented in a carton box depicting the newspaper style vinyl sleeve.
As with the Beatles cassettes, some 'all gold' solo cassettes were re-pressed well into the 1980's, original versions have a metallic looking gold paint on the inlays whilst the actual tapes had labels (rather than have the info printed directly onto the shell) and there was no dolby noise reduction.
Circular EMI Logo/Gold Top Style (1973-1976)
Those definitely
issued in this form were All Things Must Pass*,
Ringo, Mind
Games, Band on the Run, Walls and Bridges,
Goodnight
Vienna, Dark Horse, Rock 'n' Roll, Venus and Mars, Blast
From Your Past and
Wings at the Speed of Sound.
*All Things Must Pass was a belated gold re-issue and, unlike all other Beatle related 'Circular EMI' cassettes, All Things Must Pass does not boast Dolby Noise Reduction.
Three other solo albums from this period that bucked EMI's mid '70's inlay design trend were Shaved Fish, Extra Texture and The Best of George Harrison, the first two had full height covers (no gold). Shaved Fish also had a different cover to the vinyl sleeve - the drawings (which must have been considered to be too small to reproduce effectively on a small cassette cover) were replaced by the Japanese flag segment. The Best of George Harrison had a white band across the top of the cover onto which the title was printed with the same style lettering as on the vinyl sleeve.
There is a small possibility that Sentimental Journey and
Beaucoups
of Blues were re-issued with either 'all gold' or 'circular EMI' designs.
Again, as with the 'all gold' cassettes, original '73/'74 versions
of 'circular EMI' editions have metallic gold inlays (rather than yellowy-brown
print) and the tapes were labelled.
