Dawn Paterson, (clifton.paterson@xtra.co.nz) of: Long Beach, Dunedin, New Zealand at: Wed Dec 19 19:40:19 2001 Hi, This site is a great find for me. I am presently trying to find Scottish connections for my great-grandfather. He was James Carmichael, cames to New Zealand in 1961, landing at Port Chalmers on board the "Pladda" out of Glassgow. He settled in the Dunedin area, first owning his own coach service and then driving for Cobb & Co. He also owned considerable land in the Lovell's Flat area. He made quite a name for himself driving for Cobb & Co and I have been able to follow his exploits easily. He married Elizabeth Milne in Dunedin in 1863. However, it has proved difficult to find him prior to NZ. In an interview in 1918 he said he was born in August 13th, 1838 at "Elderslie" in Dunbartonshire. I have found Elderslie in Renfrewshire, but I don't really know which place. I have no other leads. He named his children Robert, John Alexander, Mary Ella, Isobel, Elizabeth, Jane Lloyd. Perhaps the names may connect him to your family or perhaps you have a missing James. Family stories tell me "Jimmy was a gentleman driver in the old country and drove for Cobb & Co. when he came her" The Cobb & Co bit is certainly true, I would love to find his trail in Scotland. I hope there is someone out there that can help. Regards Dawn.
