My wife's mother was a Carmichael. The first Carmichael that we can trace that came to Barbados was Capt. Archibald Carmichael. He married Margery Leslie, this marriage was recorded twice here in Barbados,first on the 20th. June 1666 in St. John's Church, where her father William Leslie was the first Rector. It was also recorded on the 20th. Dec.1666 in Christ Church parish, where the Carmichaels resided. One of their sons Christopher Carmichael married Mary Vaughn on the 4th. Sept. 1693 in St. John. Their other son Archibald Carmichael married her sister Sarah Vaughn, but there is no record of this marriage. This information was discovered from reading the Will of her mother Margaret Vaughn, dated 1702. In the 1715 Census of Barbados, in the parish of St. George, are listed Archibald Carmichael age 41, Sarah Carmichael age 34, and their children, Archibald 13, Christopher 11, William 9, Fran 6, Sarah 4, Elizabeth 2. There is a Sugar Plantation in St. George parish Barbados,named 'CARMICHAEL' which was owned by Archibald Carmichael Jnr. which is about 2 miles from our home. Research was done by Dutch writer Simon Carmiggelt (the son of Harmen's brother), but the result seems to be lost The family Carmiggelt was settling during the 80-years war and served under the Earl of Leicester.
