Stephanie Baker Nicholson, (106016.747@compuserve.com) of: Edinburgh but St Andrews University from September to May at: Sat Jun 5 13:29:59 1999
A few snippets gathered during the study of Scottish history during my first year as a mature student at St. Andrews University, Fife, Scotland (home of golf)
1.In George Hume's diary an entry dated February 1696 states he owed Carmichael of Bonintone £2000. (Hope he paid it back!)
George Hume's great aunt Elizabeth married Sir James Carmichael. She died 1659.
2. M Perceval-Maxwell wrote a book recording the Scottish Migration to Ulster in the Reign of James VI : The 1609 Scottish Applicants list on 6 July (date of enrolment) name of David Carmichael son of James of Pottieshaw with Edinburgh? was sponsored by John Ross, Burgess of Glasgow. John Ross, Burgess of Glasgow (with Lanark in brackets) was sponsored by James Carmichael of Pottieshaw.
3. 1641 - 12 May - The treasurer depute and justice clerk was Sir James Carmichael and he was one of the 6 nobles who did not sign a letter to King Charles asking him to summon a convention.
4. I also have a list of references to Carmichael in various textbooks which I can supply if anyone is interested.
5. Lord Carmichael of Skirling's memoirs were prepared by his wife Mary and published in 1926.
6. A. E. Gunther wrote a life of William Carmichael McIntosh MD FRS who was a pioneer in Marine Biology.
7. I also have a list of properties of Carmichael found in the Country Directory of Scotland for the following years: 1886 - 9; 1872; 1875; 1878; 1882-85; 1912.
8. In McDonald's Scottish Gazetteer of 1969 - 70 Carmichael was 11,322 acres and population of 1810. On page 99 there is a list of farmers belonging to Carmichael and Thankerton.
9. In the Household Book of Lady Grisell Baillie 1692 - 1733 she entertained to dinner Lady Hyndford, daughter of John 5th Earl of lauderdale and wife of James Carmichael (2nd earl). There were 10 guests at table.
10. Peter Carmichael of Balmaddie along with Leslie and Melville were the 'executioners' (not assassins) of nasty Cardinal David Beaton.
11. In Mary Sanderson's book "Cardinal of Scotland" page 272 "Richard Carmichael was a singer in the Chapel Royal and was accused of slandering priests 'in his sleep'. He was compelled to 'burn his bill'; his escheated goods remitted to him 25 March 1539"

Rumors that he was around Ontario before moving North and had at least one sister living in Ontario. Thought to be of Irish or Scotish decent. Probably born around 1886.

I am son of Horace Dodson Carmichael, son of Horace Henry and Edna Faye Gay Carmichael. My father was one of three boys: Richard Henry, Horace Dodson, and Jack. Richard had three sons, my father had me and my brother, Horace Dodson, Junior, and Jack had two sons. I am more schooled in my mother's family, the Rives of Dorset, England, but have met many Carmichaels at Scottish gatherings and Saint Andrews Society activities around the world, as well as walking the Carmichael areas of Scotland... beautiful indeed!

Betty Ruth Carmichall/Carmichael Klas, (KLAS43@AOL.COM) of: Salt Lake City, Utah 84117 at: Thu Jun 17 18:46:36 1999
I am Betty Carmichall Klas (1943) raised in Fort Worth, TX. My father, Floyd Loveless Carmichall (1899-1995) was of the Hillsboro/Woodbury, TX "Carmichaels", and spelled our family name with 2 L's as he believed his parents did. To my knowledge, the remainder of our family uses the traditional spelling of Carmichael. I have met my wonderful cousins, Richard(deceased), Dodson of Dallas, and Jack of Austin, who were mentioned by Gordon Rives Carmichael on this site on June 12, 1999. I have never met Gordon but found him on this Site. I would so enjoy meeting more of our family if they would like to contact me. 1832 E. Meadowmoor Rd., Salt Lake City, Utah 84117-5945. Klas43@aol.com This Presbyterian thanks the LDS Church for Opening this Geneology site to all of us.
