Karen Dunn, (jdunn@mail.snider.net) of: Little Rock, AR at: Wed May 5 16:58:16 1999 Hello! Great site! Came here from a link from a Mitchell page.
Lisa A. Kelly, (kelly63@onslowonline.net) of: Camp Lejeune, NC at: Wed May 5 21:17:18 1999 Dear Mr. Carmichael, I visited your website recently and saw that you had updated your files with the information I sent you about my family. I don't know if this happens to you often, but I have just found out that what we had been told about our ancestry is not completely correct -- they left out a generation. I have just received a Civil War pension file from Raleigh, NC, that has changed all my family's previous understanding about our Carmichael heritage, and I thought you would like the information, too. The file shows my great-great-grandmother, Eliza Ann (Grubbs) Carmichael, is the widow of John W. Carmichael, who died at Newport News, VA, as a prisoner of war on June 5, 1865. The pension file confirms that my family is actually descended from John W. Carmichael, who fought and died in the Civil War, and who was the eldest son of Edward Carmichael (who is in turn the eldest son of Barzilla Carmichael). My family is not descended from "John Lewis Carmichael, Sr." as we had always been told. In fact, I am beginning to believe that even the name John Lewis Carmichael, Sr., may be fictitious. You see, Mark Carmichael, another Carmichael researcher here in North Carolina, sent me some information which he had obtained. John Wesley Carmichael (from Winston-Salem, NC -- now dead) compiled this information (he visited my grandmother, Daisy Slate Carmichael, in Virginia in the '70's and told her about John Lewis Carmichael, Sr.). He lists my great-great-grandmother, Eliza Ann Grubbs Carmichael, as being married to John Lewis Carmichael. I am almost convinced that he visited the Loves United Methodist Church Cemetery in Walkertown, NC, and saw my great-grandfather, John Lewis Carmichael, buried next to his mother, Eliza Ann Grubbs Carmichael, beneath the headstone which reads only J. L. Carmichael, and thought that they were husband and wife, not mother and son. There is only one headstone at this particular plot, although my great-grandfather, his wife, his mother, and his daughter are buried there. The order of the graves is, from left to right: John Lewis Carmichael, Eliza Ann (Grubbs) Carmichael, Oda Carmichael (the daughter, who died at age four), and Ludie (Louisa West) Carmichael (his wife). As I said, the grave marker states only his name and is positioned above his and his mothers graves. The pension file information makes Isaac Newton Carmichael, who is buried in the same cemetery as my great-grandfather, my great-grandfathers uncle. Per the 1860 Census, Edward (43) and Elizabeth (40) Carmichael had four sons: John W. (20), Alexander B. (18), Thomas E. (16), and Isaac N. (12). All Edward's sons fought in the Civil War, in "K" Co. 52nd NC Infantry, but only my great-great-grandfather died (I have records to confirm this). The records from the cemetery where Isaac Newton Carmichael is buried list his birth date as November 30, 1847 and death as March 16, 1928. He was married to Martha Jane Clemmons on October 10, 1867 (she was born November 25, 1844 and died July 06, 1920). They had at least one son, Thomas Melvin Carmichael, who is also buried there (born November 5, 1872 and died June 9, 1935). Thomas Melvin was married to Louisa J. Pulliam on November 10, 1910 (born September 10, 1879 and died January 21, 1940). Thomas and Louisa Carmichael in turn had at least one son, Phillip James Carmichael (born November 1, 1912 and died November 27, 1995). He married Mabel Kathleen Grubbs on September 6, 1936 (she is apparently still living). All this information comes from the records of Love's United Methodist Church Cemetery in Walkertown, NC. Interestingly, I have seen information showing that Edward was married to Elizabeth Grubbs (his son John W. Carmichael also married a Grubbs). My great-great-grandmother, Eliza Ann Grubbs Carmichael, was the daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth Grubbs (both she and her mother were widowed by the time of the 1870 Census and were living together). John W. and Eliza Ann could only have been married a short time before he went to the Civil War since they were living in their parents' homes when the census was taken in 1860 and my great-grandfather was born in August 1861 (there was also a child born after my great-great-grandfather left for the war in 1862, Ella E., but I don't know what happened to her). I am waiting to get the pension records for Edward's other sons. Apparently, Alexander and Thomas left the Forsyth County area after the Civil War. They do not show up on the 1870 Census. I hope this information is helpful to you. If you would like a copy of the pension file I would be glad to send it to you. Sincerely, Lisa Kelly

Barbara Ann Carmichael Banks, (BaBanks@aol.com) of: Minneapolis, Minnesota USA at: Wed May 26 06:42:09 1999 I am grand daughter of Nello Daniel Carmichael (born 1908 in Stillwater,Minnesota,as far as I know now). He had one brother Reginald Louis. I am just about to embark on this wonderful ancestry journey. Very few surviving Carmichaels from this lineage. Possible relationship to a LeBoutilier member. Possible kinship or marriage or relationship with the Daniels family (who are from Kentucky, believed to be kin to the Still Brewing King of whiskey himself, Jack Daniels). I would appreciate any possible info to piece my puzzle together. Carmichaels in Minnesota are very small. My father is Delard Richard Carmichael born Dec 17, 1925 in Minneapolis, MN His heritage was both Scottish and Irish (50/50). I have no information whatsoever of his Carmichael grandfather except that this grandfathers parents owned/operated a lumber mill in or near the Stillwater township of Minnesota in the late 1800s to possibly the early 1900s. It is said that my Great grandfather (Nello's father) was outcast by his parents because of his marriage choice and that his two children, Nello and Reginald, were captively raised by the grandparents under the care of a nanny who was perhaps a LeBoutilier. Nello and Reginald's grandmother was supposedly a Daniels decendent and after marriage to the Carmichael, left the Kentucky region for Minnesota. My trail is cold. Would appreciate any comments, ideas etc. So far the courthouse records are a dead end. Great Hurrah's to Lisa Kelly for such an incredible composition tracing her lineage! I can only dream that I will find such a treasure! Thank you for this site! It is fabulous!
