BOXING DAY

A number of people e-mailed me asking "What is Boxing Day", so I've decided to put this info on the Website for a while to save anyone else the problem.

Boxing Day (December 26th) was the day when domestic servants were given their Christmas "boxes" or gifts, usually of money, by the master/mistress of the household. If they were lucky, they might get some time off, so the family would have to fend for themselves. If they were unlucky, their Christmas boxes might be of cloth, clothes or footwear so that they could carry out their duties.

Nowadays, it's just another holiday, (unless you're a St Albans Mummer).
