Cistercian Monk's.

The First Bunyan's came to the Scottish Borders in or around the 11th or 12th centuries, possibly in the form of Cistercian monks to help build Melrose Abbey.

The first Cistercian Abbey built in England was Rievaulx Abbey , Yorkshire, founded in 1132 by the "white monks" from Clairvaux in France.

King David 1st of Scotland requested the monks of Rievaulx, to build a daughter house in Melrose.

Melrose Abbey was the first Cistercian Abbey to be built in Scotland in 1136.
