There are a number of clean, sandy beaches within a short driving distance, in addition to
the many others situated around the Island. These provide excellent conditions for
surfers, windsurfers and other water sport enthusiasts alike. They also prove popular areas
for power kites and kite flying for young and old!!
There is excellent fresh water and sea fishing throughout the Island, as well as an abundance of natural wildlife and bird life to enjoy.
The nearby Castle Grounds offers numerous walks and trails, which feature a mixture of woodland, shoreline, river and moorland areas, and can be guided by a Ranger on request. These have many impressive views overlooking Stornoway and surrounding areas. Incorporated in the Grounds, is the Stornoway Golf course, which is a popular and well maintained 18-hole course for keen golfers. The 19th hole is the modern (even more popular!) Clubhouse.
The Island as a whole, offers excellent opportunities for hill walking, mountain biking or rambling, taking in spectacular high level views of rugged coastlines and neighboring islands. Other popular interests include, the ancient Callanish Stones, The Broch, The Blackhouse, The Whalebone Arch, the Norse Mill, the working Harris Tweed Mill in Shawbost and the spectacular scenery of the Butt of Lewis, where the next stop would be America or Iceland!
Also on offer as you tour the island is an excellent selection of craft shops where textiles, pottery, woodwork and other artworks can be viewed and purchased.
The "An Lanntair" arts centre in Stornoway also offers an excellent selction of music, film and theatrical presentations as well as artistic workshops and also offers a well stocked bar and cafe.
For eating out, Stornoway offers a good selection of hotels, restaurants and bars, providing fresh local produce as well as a variety of other cuisines to tempt your pallet! Outwith the town itself, as you tour around the Island, there are various hotels, cafes and restaurants to provide refreshments.
The local authority covering the Outer Hebrides is Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and their website contains large amounts of information on the local area and services.
