We later replaced the cardboard bezel and
polystyrene screen with more
durable Perspex (Plexiglas) by masking the viewing area of the
screen cover, using masking tape, sticky labels for the corners
and newspaper, and then spraying the back with black acrylic paint. The
whole cabinet was resanded down and given a new paint job using a gloss
roller and some exterior satin paint.
A coin door purchased from E-Bay provided a more
authentic arcade look
and feel. Games now begin with the sound of the coin dropping through
the mechanism.
We replaced the homemade control panel and
marquee graphics with
professionally printed artwork from MameMarquees.com. The control panel
was printed onto sticky backed vinyl with our existing design. We
changed the graphics slightly on the marquee which now included our own
kanagaroo design and had these printed onto luster laminate.
We are more than happy with the quality as the
backlit marquee is
bright and the black areas block out the light much better than the
original photopaper. The control panel is fairly tough and coated with
laminate so we ditched the clear overlay. The graphics are clear with
well defined colours despite being inkjet printed. You have to get very
close to see any jagged edges typical of any digital process. I
guess this could only totally be eliminated by using silkscreen printed
graphics, (which woud be way to costly and difficult for this project)
or else sticking to horizontal and vertical lines which don't seem to
suffer from pixelation. They artwork was delivered quickly too despite
being printed in the US and I doubt we could have got it done any
quicker here in the UK.
The colours are brighter than they appear in
these photos which have
been washed out slightly by the flash.
The marquee photo also shows the new marquee
retainers which screw to
the panels above and below the logo.
Perhaps for a future control panel!
New retro control panel in progress (antique
Crayola trackball as
centrepiece). I've just started working on a new panel which is a
mash-up of a Stargate Defender and Missile Command layout.
