Pauls' Pick-up

 Marina Mk1 l0cwt. Pick up

(Prize Winner - Best Modified - National 2006)

This is Paul Mundays' Mk1 10 cwt pick-up - you don't see many at all these days and especially not in this condition.  Here's Paul to tell the story himself.

My Dad bought the pick up 1986/87 from the Isle of Wight , as he was starting his own business called L M Autos doing car repairs, body repairs, welding, mechanics and electrics.   When he first bought the pick up, he tidied up the bodywork, sprayed her and then got her sign written by L M Autos.  She had a hard and busy time in his business, towing in cars, picking up engines and gearboxes, and sometimes mobile welding.  Then one day I asked my Dad if I could have it some day, and he said I could have it, if I passed my test.

So when I was 17, I started lessons with an instructor, and my Mum, learning to drive in the pick up.  I passed my test, and my Dad kept his word and let me have it. I was chuffed and happy at 17 to have a Marina pick up, showing it off to all my mates. I then started to tidy up and repair it.  New wings, sills, rear arches and some filler work.  I then picked a colour, metallic red (pearl) paint and had it repainted and baked in a spray booth oven at my place of work - Pooles Peugeot.  When it was finished, it looked great, showing it off to my mates. It had lots of spotlights, new seats and lots of other extras. I had lots of fun in it driving it everywhere.  In 1989 I decided to take it off the road and give it a rest, as I had a new toy, a Mini Clubman.

(NEC 2006 - she looks just as good under the lights)

In August 2005 I decided to start restoring the pick up again and thanks to my work mates again at the body repair centre (Pooles Peugeot).  This time, a full strip down, more welding and filler work and bare metal respray, lots and lots of help from my work mates, (thanks to them!)

I could not decide on a colour, was thinking of white, but wasn't sure. So Dean, my ex body Shop Manager, now Service Manager, decided to play with the colours after watching the Pimp My Ride TV programme. He chose blue and silver, four blues in fact, plus some artwork on the bonnet and sills.  All the colours were blended together. It looks great and this is how you see it now. I've spent lots of money on paint and chroming etc, too much to mention, lots more plans yet, plus two more Marina 's waiting, a MK1 Coupe and a MK2 saloon, so lots of work to be done!

So there we are - Paul's' pick-up - does it give you any ideas out there?  Some of you will have noticed that the engine isn't standard - at some point in the past an owner had dropped in a 1800 TC engine, so it's a go and show car.
