Morton escape fine over Nazi slur

12/2/04

Morton have been censured by the SFA but have escaped a fine over comments in an article in the official club programme. The article which appeared in the programme for the Partick Thistle game made a tongue in cheek suggestion that Airdrie Utd sold Nazi SS uniforms on their club website.

The article found its way into the program due to time constraints as it was sent directly to the printers without being edited first. Airdrie Utd chairman Jim Ballantyne was furious at the slur and the incident was reported to the SFA. Morton apologised for the incident.

The SFA  general purpose committee met on Monday to discuss the incident and warned that it was the responsibility of clubs to check the content of their match programme. They decided a fine was not suitable but severely censured the Cappielow club.
