2009 will celebrate the International Year of Astronomy, the 40th anniversary of the Moon Landings and the 200th anniversary of the death of Haydn (the composer of the world famous oratorio The Creation). To mark these significant events, the BBC has commissioned Salford based composer Alan Edward Williams (Reader in Music at Salford University) to write a 21st century vocal work that reflects our present understanding and scientific knowledge of the creation theory. Following extensive research in astrophysics and cosmology, Alan and his librettist, Philip Goulding, have created a large-scale, multi-media vocal work that offers a fitting and timely companion piece to the celebrated Haydn oratorio.

Alan William's oratorio Wonder: A Scientific Oratorio will be premiered at the Maxwell Hall, Salford University on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 November 2009. It will be performed by the BBC Philharmonic, the BBC Singers and Salford Choral Society and will be conducted by Tecwyn Evans.

In partnership with Manchester University Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, the performances will also feature unique film footage and rarely seen images of deep space taken by the Lovell telescope in Jodrell, plus further imagery from NASA and BBC archives.  To support and enhance the concert experience, the performance space will be transformed to transport us to 'other worlds' through large-scale art installations and special lighting effects.
