United Reformed Church, Wareham.

The first church on this site was erected in 1694 . This was enlarged and rebuilt in 1747. When two thirds of the town was destroyed in 1762 the church was gutted. The charred walls were kept but a new roof and interior were added when the church was rebuilt. The gallery and pillars were added at this time. Each pillar being carved from a single tree. The large hall was built in 1860 and has been redecorated recently. In 1878 an apse was added with a circular glass stained window. New pews, pulpit and pine ribs in the ceiling were also added. The organ, dated 1884, is in exellent condition. Much work is being done to restore this building. The 20 feet or so of alluvial soil foundations result in poor building stability over time and hence account for some of the visible damage. Very few of this style of building remain in existance.
