The church is reputed to have been founded by St Aldhelm in the 7th century. Allegedly it was destroyed by King Cnut in 1015 who later rebuilt it when he converted to christianity. It is the most complete Saxon church in Dorset and dates back to around 1020 AD. It contains amazing 12th, 16th and 17th century painted plasterwork. The chancel arch is decorated in 12th century geometric patterns and a painting of the Ten Commandments (dated 1713) over a 17th century Carolean coat-of-arms. Underneath are 11th and 12th century wall paintings. The south window and priest doorway were added in the 13th century whilst the east window and blocked north door are 15th century. The porch is 16th century and the tower was rebuilt in 1712. It contains 1 bell by Clement Tozier dated 1698. The 8 sided font is inscribed "set up by William Welsted and Phillip Helliar 1607". By 1736 the church was used solely for the blessing of women after baptism, marriage and childbirth. In 1936 it was repaired and rededicated. Also a preist chair (circa 1650) was added. In 1990 extensive repairs were carried out. Exterior POOR Interior Some artwork faults UNSUITABLE Utilities ?. |
